week 1 copyright

copyright. patent law. trademark. ugh. the first part of the videos was informative and depressing. being able to copyright things for such a long time seems like a drag for society. we seem to be able to move faster and evolve quicker but are not because of old thoughts and laws holding our society back. the second part of the videos gave a little hope with fair use, but with all the restrictions i would rather just skip it all together. this all was making my head spin until the last part of the videos creative commons.

wow. what a great idea. i have seen creative common licenses before and have even had to publish something with a creative commons license, but i never knew what it truly was. being able to license your work immediately and the way you want is genius. i am thankful for having watched these videos and learned more on copyright but it still makes my head hurt, thankfully my new aspirin will be cc!

  1. Mary, Your post truly made me chuckle, especially the portion of the aspirin. I can understand how may feel about copyrighting. All the links the professor provided were useful but can seem overwhelming and be a bit of too much information to understand in such a short while. Click on this link for a chance to possible understand copyright a bit better without being overwhelmed. http://www.cll.com/files/2012_WMB_PTC.pdf Hope this helps.

  2. The Creative Commons License is really exciting. Have you had a chance to see the badges and logos that they offer that will label your work with the permissions that you grant? Each license has a page also called a "deed" that uses plain english to explain what permissions and restrictions are on a piece of work. I definitely find comfort in this movement and makes me stress just that much less about the archaic and lumbering body of law this country has about intellectual property protections, usage, and permissions. ~ Rath

  3. Good thing, in the age of the Internet, to be able to share things at Internet speeds. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the "reading."
